How to Throw Away a Disposable Vape or Empty Cart Safely

· 6 min read

There are two kinds of empty here, and they go to different places. An all-in-one carries a lithium-ion battery, which makes it hazardous waste in most of the country. A 510 cartridge has no battery at all. Sort them correctly and both are simple.

Why a disposable does not go in the trash

Lithium-ion cells can short and catch fire when they are crushed or punctured — which is exactly what happens in the back of a garbage truck and on a recycling sorting line. Waste facilities report a steady rise in fires started by batteries, and small sealed devices like vapes are a large part of the problem because nobody can see the battery inside.

Disposing of an all-in-one

  1. Make sure it is finished. Check the oil window first — it may not be as empty as it looks.
  2. Do not open it or try to pull the battery out. Puncturing the cell is the one way to make it dangerous in your hands.
  3. Cover the charging port with a piece of tape, so nothing metal can bridge the contacts while it waits.
  4. Keep it somewhere cool, in a jar or small box, out of reach of children and pets — there is still oil residue inside.
  5. Take it to a household hazardous waste drop-off. Most counties run one, as a permanent site or on collection days. Search your county name with "household hazardous waste".

Some electronics retailers and battery collection bins accept vapes, but many specifically do not because of the oil residue. Call or check before you bring one in.

Empty 510 cartridges

A cart is glass or ceramic and metal with no battery, so the fire risk is gone. It still is not curbside recyclable — the residue and the mixed materials mean recycling plants reject it. In most places a finished cart can go in the regular trash; some counties ask for cannabis vape hardware to come to hazardous waste as well. Your county's waste site will say which.

The battery is the part worth keeping. A rechargeable 510 battery runs dozens of carts before it needs replacing, which is the simplest way to send fewer batteries to the waste stream at all.

If a battery is swollen, hot or leaking

A device that has puffed up, feels hot when idle or smells sweet and chemical has a damaged cell. Stop using it and stop charging it straight away.

  • Move it onto something non-flammable — a tiled floor, a ceramic plate, bare concrete outside — away from anything that burns.
  • Do not press, bend or puncture it.
  • Let it cool completely, then bag it separately and tell the hazardous waste site it is damaged when you drop it off.
  • If it smokes or catches fire, get away from it and call 911. Do not try to carry a burning battery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I throw a disposable vape in the trash?
No. It contains a lithium-ion battery that can catch fire when crushed in a garbage truck or at a waste facility. Take it to a household hazardous waste drop-off instead.
Can vapes be recycled?
Not in a curbside bin — recycling plants cannot separate the battery from the rest. Some battery and electronics collection points accept them, but many do not because of the oil residue, so check before you go.
How do I dispose of an empty 510 cart?
A cart has no battery, so it is not a fire risk. In most places it can go in the regular trash, though some counties ask for cannabis vape hardware at hazardous waste sites. It is not curbside recyclable.
Should I take the battery out of a disposable before throwing it away?
No. Opening a disposable risks puncturing the cell, which is what makes lithium batteries dangerous. Tape over the charging port and drop off the whole device at a hazardous waste site.
What do I do with a swollen vape battery?
Stop using and charging it, move it onto a non-flammable surface away from anything that burns, and do not press or puncture it. Once it is cool, bag it separately and take it to a hazardous waste site, telling them it is damaged.
Where is my nearest household hazardous waste drop-off?
Your county or city runs it. Search your county name with "household hazardous waste" — most have a permanent site or regular collection days, and many list exactly which items they accept.
