Edibles vs Vapes: How Long Each Takes, and How Long It Lasts

· 7 min read

Inhaled THC goes from your lungs straight into your bloodstream. Eaten THC goes through your stomach and liver first, and the liver changes it on the way. That one difference explains almost everything: the wait, the strength, the length, and why edibles are where most people overdo it.

Why edibles feel stronger

When you eat THC, the liver converts much of it into 11-hydroxy-THC before it reaches the rest of your body. That compound crosses into the brain readily, and many people find it heavier and more body-led than inhaled THC. It is also why the same milligram number can feel very different across formats.

Food changes the timing. An edible on an empty stomach tends to arrive sooner and sharper; after a meal, later and gentler. Neither is wrong — but changing it between sessions makes your last experience a poor guide to the next one.

Which one fits

Choose a vape when

  • You want to feel it soon and be clear-headed again later the same day.
  • You are new, or trying a new strain, and want to stop the moment you have had enough.
  • Flavour is part of the point — terpenes reach you in a vape and mostly do not in an edible.

Choose an edible when

  • You want something long and steady — a film, a long evening, a slow weekend afternoon.
  • You do not want to inhale anything.
  • You want a number you can count: a gummy carries a printed dose per piece, a draw does not.

If you are starting out with gummies, the gummies dosing guide covers how to find your amount. For inhaled formats, pre-rolls vs flower vs carts compares the options.

Frequently asked questions

How long do edibles take to kick in?
Usually between 30 minutes and 2 hours, and they peak around 2 to 4 hours in. Eating on an empty stomach tends to make them arrive sooner; after a meal, later. Wait at least two hours before taking more.
How long does a vape high last?
It usually starts within minutes, peaks around 10 to 30 minutes in, and the main effects fade over roughly two to three hours.
Are edibles stronger than vapes?
Many people find them stronger and longer-lasting, because the liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which reaches the brain readily. The bigger risk is timing: people re-dose before the first edible arrives.
Can I take an edible and vape at the same time?
You can, but do it knowingly. Vaping on top of an edible that has not kicked in yet is the most common way people end up much higher than they meant to be. Let the edible arrive first.
Which is better for beginners, gummies or a vape?
A vape is easier to control in the moment, because you feel each draw within minutes and can stop. A gummy has a printed dose, which helps with measuring, but requires patience — start with a small piece and wait two hours.
Why does my edible feel different every time?
Food is the usual reason. An edible on an empty stomach behaves differently from one after a meal. Tolerance, sleep and hydration play a part too.
